Melted heart

When the house is quiet and there is no little person bustling around going about her day, I sometimes notice the cutest things.

I nearly tripped over these guys in the middle of the room after I had finally gotten her down for her day sleep.  How cute are they all lined up?!

This one has melted my heart.  Look at her knitting.  She’s always pretending to knit… “Ober, around, under and osh”, but look at this.  Maybe things just seem cuter when they’re tucked up in bed, but she’s had a real go here.  Dear little bub.

p.s… yes I do realise that it is probably a bit dangerous leaving knitting needles on the couch and not noticing your 2yo knitting with them, but these ones are very bendy plastic and I am usually very careful, I promise!

I just made this little doll is for Ivy’s cousin.  It’s a bit more detailed than the first, my pattern is still a work in progress though!  I used recycled material for the dress and the lace came from a vintage nightie.

This jumper took me so long to knit.  Luckily, I do like it and it feels like a soft, warm blanket (100% merino wool of course), it will be perfect for a cold Queenstown winter.  The pattern is an old Cleckheaton pattern and was very easy and knitted sideways in one whole piece.

I could not love this dress more.  It is without a doubt one of my favourite vintage finds.  This is one little dress that I will keep forever.

I had been looking for something perfect for Ivy to wear for her first birthday party and had even thought that I might buy something new (something I very rarely do!!).  I had a couple of options for her, but nothing that I loved.  I went into my local op shop on the day before her birthday and with my crazy vintage-finding luck, saw this perfect dress sitting on top of a whole lot of bags being unpacked.  Oh, I love it.

I will be linking this up to Hart & Sews Little Vintage Style again.  There are some pretty cute little vintage wearing kids out there!

I have just listed some of these in my shop and will be putting the rest in over the next few days… let me know if you are interested in anything before it is listed :)

Recently we have been hearing lots and lots of “When I get big I might…” and I love it.  It gives such a gorgeous insight into what my just turned 2 year old thinks about and it amazes me she is already thinking about her future.

Most of the time we hear, “When I get big I will fly helicopters”.  Sometimes it is aeroplanes and other popular ones are, “ride big bucking bulls” and “do big jumps on my snowboard”.  She is so much like her dad.

She was therefore very excited to go and watch her dad fly a plane a few weekends ago.

She wasn’t very impressed at this point when she realised that the extent of her turn was going to be sitting in it on the ground!  I still love these photos though and I love this vintage dress that she is wearing.  She has worn it so much already as the weather gets colder and I know she’ll wear it lots more.

I am going to start linking in to Hart & Sews “Little Vintage Style”, this is a bit of a poor attempt, but I will try to do a weekly post with Ivy wearing some of the gorgeous vintage things that I find for her.

IMG_6592I am so excited that we have booked our flights back to New Zealand for winter.  We had planned to continue living between New Zealand and Australia after Ivy was born, but a great year-round job opportunity came up for us and we only managed 6 weeks last year.   This year, although it will still only be 2 months, we will have our usual life back!

We even have our beautiful little house back, albeit in a different, renovated and extended state!  I’m so happy, I LOVE this house, it is where I got pregnant, found out I was pregnant and loved the first few months of having my little girl in my belly.  It is also where we lived while we planned our wedding and where all of my family came to stay with us for our wedding.  It is the happiest little house.  I can’t wait to be back there, have Ivy there and to spend lots of time together as a family.

I love pulling back the bedroom curtain to see that everything is white.  Snow days are the best.  No work, no school, there is such an excited and happy vibe in the air.

I was thinking today about a particularly amazing time in my life, when Brett and I were starting another of our adventures, completely and utterly care-free and so happy.  It was very early morning, as we’d slept in the ute the night before and woken to a view that would have to be seen to be even remotely comprehended.  We’d headed off, sitting together in the bench seat sharing one earphone each of my iPod, sipping hot coffee from of our freshly made thermos.  The anticipation, love and happiness of that moment will be something I will remember forever.

I then thought about my life now, so different, but exactly where I would have hoped to be if I had have thought at that moment where I would like to be in 5 (or so!) years time.  I have so much more that I want, but that is part of the journey and excitement of it.  I still share my days with the same amazing person who looks at life in the best of ways, but now he is my family.  I have the most beautiful, clever, friendly and adventurous little girl who is my world.  I love my little 120 year old house, I did the first minute we drove past it.  We have so much to look forward to and I feel so happy and lucky to have my simple and humble, but still very exciting life.

Here is our other home and part of what makes my life so happy.

on the lake

This was my first sight of Lake Wakatipu, Cecil & Walter Peaks.  I still had my backpack on at this point, straight off the bus, with no idea where I was going to stay or where my journey would lead.  I couldn’t have imagined what lay ahead or how special this place would become to me.

Q'town from coronet

This is the view from our Queenstown “office”.  This is what we look at all day when we teach people to snowboard.  It doesn’t matter how many years you see it for, it still takes your breath away.

We’re very excited to go back.

Our little girl missed out on her birthday party this year.  After being unsure whether we were actually going to have one, deciding we would, doing the invitations, buying things for decorations and all of the food, we all got sick.  Not a cold kind of sick, a violent, horrible kind of sick.  Not nice at all.

I thought I might share a couple of things that we did anyway.

The invitations.

I made these big pom poms before we were sick, so we waited until Ivy went to bed the night before her birthday, put them up with some streamers and set out her presents so she would see them when she came out of her room in the morning.  It was a pretty special birthday morning, so it was very worth it.

Here is my beautiful two year old.  She is just so amazing and lovely.

My rainbow layer cake also didn’t eventuate and Ivy was adamant that she wanted a helicopter cake anyway.  My best effort for the occasion consisted of a cupcake with a helicopter on top, it was after all, a very rough week!

We ended up with 3 birthday celebrations, including cakes, “happy birthday” and candles.  So even though it wasn’t as I’d planned, I’m pretty sure she loved the whole resulting birthday celebrations and felt very special, which is what it’s all about anyway.

Life is so amazing.  What an incredible thing it is to be a mother.  The most important and special title that I will ever have in my life.

mum & me at mama'sMy beautiful mum and I, 1980.

IMG_3137My beautiful Ivy and I, 2011

Being a mum makes me want to be the best person I can be.  It makes me want to be healthy and grow old so that I can always be there for my little girl.  I want to help her to be everything that she wants to be, to protect her and to love her more than anyone else in the world could ever know.

We have just gotten back from a nice night away. We all love going to new places.  We explored a new town, ate nice food and went to sleep all snuggled together in a nice big hotel bed.

I love being a mum and I love my mum so much too.  Happy Mothers Day.
